Insurance requirements for entering Georgia in 2026

Since 1 January 2026, tourists entering Georgia need health and accident insurance for their entire trip, including their arrival and departure dates.

Six things to check in your policy

A policy from a Georgian or foreign insurer may qualify. Check any existing policy first: where it was purchased is not a reason on its own to buy a second one.

Article 2 of the rules lists the required information: the parties to the contract, territory and subject of insurance, start and end of cover, insured risks, sum insured and limits, premium amount, and place and deadline for payment.

Territory

Georgia must be included in the area of cover.

Risks

The policy must provide both health and accident cover.

Sum insured

At least 30,000 GEL. This is the minimum amount of cover, not the price of the policy.

Dates

The whole stay, including arrival and departure days.

Document language

Georgian or English.

Format

An electronic or paper policy is accepted. Printing is optional if you can show a readable digital document.

Who may be exempt?

Exemptions depend on your documents and entry status. An ordinary tourist trip is not an exemption in itself. Article 1 lists these categories:

Visas

Holders of diplomatic or special visas.

Passports

Holders of diplomatic, official, service or special passports.

Accreditation

Accredited staff of diplomatic, consular and international missions, and their accredited family members.

Agreements

People whose entry is covered by Georgia’s international agreements or treaties.

Transport

Drivers engaged in international road freight or passenger transport.

Check whether the exemption applies to your exact status. If it is unclear, ask a Georgian consulate before travelling.

Before you reach the border

Under Article 3, an authorised border officer may ask to see your insurance policy. Have it ready.

Check personal details

Match names and document numbers to the travel document. Make sure every traveller is insured.

Check when cover starts

Both entry and departure must fall within the covered period. Receiving a PDF is not the same as cover taking effect; allow for any waiting period.

Save an offline copy

Download the PDF and check it opens without internet access. Save the insurer’s assistance contact details; a printed copy can be a useful backup.

Entry requirements and medical benefits are different checks. Compare deductibles, service limits, exclusions and the assistance procedure. The minimum sum insured does not mean every treatment is covered.
